Note: We are advocates of something known as the Yost serial wiring standard. This standard is designed to allow any two serial devices to be connected via a "roll-over" cable, and when combined with some discipline in setting all your serial equipment to a generic baud rate (such as 9600), you can virtually guarantee that you can hook up to any device without having to puzzle over baud rates, null modem adapters, gender changers, 9-to-25's, and all the other serial communications annoyances.

We make Yost serial adapters for all DB ports on our equipment and torque them down, and as a result we don't ever have to mess with silly cabling issues.
Lots of devices have RJ45 serial connectors but do not have Yost pinouts. We use green cables to indicate serial, and if the end crimp is not wired to Yost standard, we mark it as follows:
Red strain relief or collar marking: Xyplex
Gray strain relief or collar marking: Cisco/Dell/etc (inverse Yost)
Blue strain relief or collar marking: Cyclades
